On the very next day of its constitution, a court in Rajasthan set up under POCSO has sentenced an accused to life term. 55 POCSO courts have been notified alongwith designated judges on August 7 for their constitution as POCSO courts.

The accused Santosh, had abducted a 16-year-old girl when she was alone at home in Gangapur City on February 1, 2015. The judge convicted the accused under section 376(2) and awarded him a life sentence. According to section 366, he was sentenced to seven years in jail.

As POCSO courts are set up in Rajasthan, 23 of the 35 judicial districts in the state have one POCSO court each and remaining 12 have more than one. The state now has 56 POCSO courts in total with six in Jaipur.

So far, two accused have been sentenced to death in two different cases under POCSO.

In a separate case, Judge Vanita Singh in Barmer sentenced Ghewar Singh and Shravan Singh with death sentence and three others namely Prahlad Singh, Nar Singh and Shankar Singh with seven years in prison. The judgement came on August 7.

The accused had kidnapped a 12-year-old girl who was sleeping next to her mother. They took her to a hill, raped her and when she became unconscious, threw her off the hill to make it look like a case of accidental death in 2013. They also threatened her father to lodge an FIR saying that the girl died due an accident. The father also described the victim as mentally challenged.

However, when her mother realised what had happened, she went to police and revealed the truth following which the police registered a case under POCSO.
